These Are the 10 Best Bob Hairstyles for Curly Hair, According to a Hair Expert

hairstyles for shoulder length curly hair

This is giving us major Spice Girl vibes and we couldn’t be more in love. This natural style lets you keep all of the thickness and volume of your curls. This wash-and-go cut by Texas-based stylist Chris Jones has you covered. It doesn't take much to flatter a defined curl, and light layers make a low-risk choice.

Mid Length Curly Hairstyles Inverted Bob for Curly Locks

Reach full ringlet potential with these collarbone-skimming and shoulder-grazing hairstyles. Get Gwen Stefani's super-curled look by going old-school with over-night curlers. Twist and pin your bangs backs for an unexpected hair moment.

#58: Naturally Curly Cut for a Round Face

Try a curl that starts mid-way down your hair and wraps into loose ringlets. A healthy amount of long layers keeps this look from feeling too heavy, while a good diffuser adds definition to her long curls. Negga's small spiral curls add personality to her short style. Rita Ora shows us how to rock untamed curls in an easy updo. Recreate this tousled style by gathering your curls on top of your head and letting a few loose ends hang free along the front and nape of your neck. If you're thinking about cutting your hair short, do it!

#28: Deeply Side-Parted Curls

The fullness and texture of voluminous blonde curls can soften and emphasize your features, unlike flat hair that can seem unflattering. If you struggle to create ringlets in your hair, you might consider getting a perm. However, if your hair is colored, make sure a gentle perm is used to maintain the health of your locks.

Tousled Layers

Immediately switch up your layered shoulder length curly hair with…bangs! Expect to see bangs popping up a lot over the next year or so – they’re definitely making a comeback, and stronger than ever. Frame your face with curly bangs to match your gorgeous curls.

A feathery fringe here adds some sophisticated softness to the look. The shape has been over-texturized with layering on her heavy side to remove weight, allow volume, and add a pleasing aesthetic shape. The bob is under-layered on her left side to tuck cleanly behind the ear without pieces falling out. The curls create softness and movement within a square shape. This look is a curly short bob that’s razor cut into a round shape.

#57: Layered Curls with Face-Framing Bangs

Tease the roots and use volumizing products to give curls this big, glam look. A great, go-to haircut for anyone with naturally curly hair. The rounded shape is extremely flattering for virtually any face shape, especially with the addition of side swept bangs.

Standout Curly and Wavy Pixie Cuts

The asymmetrical lift of the hair from the direction of the temples gives an elegant and easygoing appearance. Who knew scrunchies would be a trend that would come back so heavily? We never thought we would be so on board for the trend to reemerge either.

You also need to consider the hair’s porosity and balance between moisture and protein in order to really give your hair what it needs. “The cut was done dry, and I love the way dry cutting brings out the best in naturally curly hair. It allows me to see where each curl wants to live and will thrive the best in the cut,” explains Hall.

A youthful, bouncy look that will never go out of style. If you want your long curls to take on a more youthful and fashion-forward approach, side-swept bangs are a great way to go. This hairstyle is bursting with energy and life, and we can’t help but notice how flawless the lighter pieces look against her face. If you want a shorter and easier-to-maintain cut, this is the perfect choice.

And 2024 has only propelled the haircuts popularity with an array of trending takes on this classic style. From ultra-short mini bobs to bouncy baroque bobs, it’s evident that this is one hairstyle that will continue to dominate for the rest of the year. And as someone with textured hair myself, I was keen to understand what the best bob hairstyles are for curly hair. The curls have the perfect definition and shape because they’ve been properly hydrated and individually defined. This hairstyle is for all curly gals who embrace their natural texture and are unafraid to show it off.

Messy lob hairstyles are any curly girls’ favorite hairdo. Ask your stylist to do a “curly cut.” This hairdo is done on dry, styled hair to best achieve the layered fullness you’re looking for. Finding the best shoulder length hair ideas for your curly hair is no easy feat. There are actually so many options to style shoulder-length hair that can range from a mane of tight coils to loose waves. The key to achieving amazing mid-length curly hair is to not be afraid to take it to new heights, no matter what your texture is. Luckily, the best medium hairstyles can be achieved with the use of little to no heat at all.

hairstyles for shoulder length curly hair

The best way to style curly hair is to dry it with a diffuser on your hairdryer. Remember that the key to keeping your hair from getting frizzy is to keep your hands out of it. The more you touch your hair, mess with it, or comb it, the frizzier it will become. If you have messy curly hair, consider golden brown curly layers. This style is perfect for adding volume to your hair without sacrificing length.

This cute curly pixie cut is carefree, fun and youthful. It totally shows off the face so that your facial features take center stage. If you are looking for a short cut for your curly hair that can withstand humidity then this is a must try. We just love naturally curly haircuts that show off your eyes and frame the face. If you like your curls to appear tousled and effortless, you’ll appreciate this style.

The color makes an interesting contrast, making you look fun and vibrant. Consider this style if you’re okay with added upkeep, like bleach treatment and regular haircuts to avoid damage. To achieve these beautiful layered curls, you need a stylist well-versed in curly and natural haircutting.

Ask your stylist for an angle around the face and lots of layers. Exuding elegance and vitality, this short, above-the-shoulder bob is perfect for showcasing natural texture. The cut is crafted to enhance the curl’s natural springiness, with layers that add volume and shape. The dark hue intensifies the hair’s natural luster, emphasizing each curl’s depth. While this hairstyle flaunts a ready-to-wear luxury, it does ask for consistent hydration to maintain the definition and prevent frizz. Achieve a carefree, beach-inspired look with this neck-length wavy bob.

Undercut Hairstyle Guide For Men: Disconnected & Peaky Blinders Haircut

undercut hairstyle men long hair

When it comes to shaved details and hair color, who says you have to pick one or the other? These box braids feature a splash of dark blue that liven up the man bun. Asymmetry is always in style and this hairstyle can make you look very fashionable. Consider dyeing your hair a lighter shade of blonde to make an even better impression. If you have really long tresses on the top part of your mohawk, you have a lot to play around with. If you are getting ready for a special occasion, don’t forget to curl up your hair to create impressive bangs.

Low Undercut Fade

With long hair on top of the head, you can opt for a combover, a side-part, or a messy style. Try this really cool side-swept mens undercut hairstyle that has dimension and looks great with grey hair! With this chop, you can pull off a neat look without getting a buzz cut. At the opposite end of the scale, guys with round faces should try to add a few inches with a style such as an undercut pompadour or quiff with tightly cropped sides. Quite possibly the oldest hairstyle in the world, dreadlocks continue to turn heads and show the world that you are your own man.

Curly Hair Undercut With Long Hairstyle

Undercuts have a long and colourful history, to say the least. Although an undercut itself is quite short, it’s usually part of a medium-length hairstyle. Use a blow dryer and a vented brush to style it up and away from the face. Then it’s simply a case of working through a small amount of your preferred product in order to achieve your chosen finish.

Stunning Undercut Haircut Styles

This is a classic long undercut hairstyle for guys with straight locks. You can easily style the hair this way at home as long as you have some patience. Don’t worry, a few stray strands will only give your hairstyle an extra charm. Popularised by the likes of Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington, the long slick back hairstyle for men can be a great option for formal events.

The ponytail is a low-maintenance hairstyle for guys who want an effortlessly chic look. Although it’s been overshadowed by the man bun in recent years, a ponytail is still a fantastic option when men want a trendy aesthetic without too much styling. Aside from pulling your hair back, you should focus on adding shine to avoid looking ungainly.

For men who want to make it look natural and be able to run their hands through it if it becomes a little messy, use a lightweight paste. The undercut with long side fringe is a powerful haircut statement. When worn down, the length emphasizes the head shape, jawline, and hair texture.

Undercut with Beard

undercut hairstyle men long hair

If you’re a bit on the wild side and want your style to match your personality, an undercut with half-pony could be a perfect choice. Blending tight sides with a go-with-the-flow look up top, this unique style will show off your fun-loving aesthetic and freewheeling style. A bold look that only the most daring of men can pull off, the undercut with pompadour is a stylish take on a classic look. If you’ve got the confidence of a rock star and want the world to know it, this striking cut is a perfect choice. A bit less extreme than some of the other styles in our collection, the low undercut fade is a classy choice that works equally well in the office or the club. If you want to show off your impeccable taste and first-class style, this cut may be what you’ve been looking for.

TRESemmé Freeze Hold Hairspray

Try styling with a straightening balm or serum for a "cleaner" finish or opt for a texture spray or curl cream to bring out any curl or wave. Those with thick tresses will look visually effortless with Dev Patel's "just rolled out of bed" look. This heavily layered cut can work on straight hair but having a bit of wave or curl can really help to bring out natural texture. Imperfection is key here so spritz strands with sea salt spray and then tousle a bit until satisfied. So to switch up and embrace your long locks with a sweet new style, read on to find the best fit for you. Practical and versatile, much of the effect of this cut depends on styling.

If you’re still experimenting with the length you want your undercut, bide your time. Keep yourself from getting bored with your look with a trendy color. Also, ask your stylist to make the top choppy (no razor-cutting!) for a chunkier, more textured feel.

In any case, a high fade is a stylish cut that you can combine with a short, medium, or long hairstyle on top. The high fade can work well with a pompadour, side part, quiff, comb-over, and fauxhawk hairstyles. Now don’t mistake this to be the conventional undercut long hairstyles for men with parting. The ombre and the undulating shades create a contrast that is hard to ignore.

If you have long hair and arm yourself with a hairdryer, you too can achieve this more styled look. Heart shaped faces run a risk of the tight sides accentuating their wide forehead. Consider opting for something featuring a Fringe instead as this tends to complement both face shapes well.

To keep this style looking fresh, wash with a clarifying shampoo like Malin + Goetz's Peppermint Shampoo ($22). If there’s anything we’re learning from this gentleman, it’s that you won’t need to worry about what your long undercut will look like when it grows out. Complement your taper undercut with some trendy cornrows like this, to make a serious style statement.

The slicked-back undercut has been worn by men who embody the alpha male archetype while exuding style. Ideal for ambitious business professionals, yet it can look hot on a date, at a party, or in any casual setting.

Disconnected Undercut

Ironically, this unexpected comeback really was before it was cool. In fact, its emergence experienced considerable backlash due to its unfortunate association with Nazi Germany. Photographs of Wehrmacht soldiers with Undercuts (to cushion their heavy combat helmets) as well as Hitler himself started circulating online.

Textured Undercut

undercut hairstyle men long hair

It features a disconnected undercut that combines the braided styling with a Mohican cut. When you learn how to work with slightly longer locks, you can proceed to grow them a little more. The most amazing and impressive hairstyles are created with very long hair.

Men’s Messy Long Top With Undercut

This is a neat, suave, sophisticated and absolutely urbane hairstyle. There is no denying that this is one undercut on long hair that cuts through social and geographical barriers like butter. The quiff introduces sobriety to your personality while the undercut is the much-required edge to make an impression. What really works for this long hair undercut style is the two tones of the blonde hair shade. It is a conventional cut but the two-color texturing gives the necessary edge that absolutely lends the much needed cool quotient to this style.

Fresh Short Bob with Bangs Looks to Style Your Blunt Cut

With a low fade long hair gains more definition without much contrast. For an edgy and impactful look, go for a high bald undercut fade. In terms of products, mousse “is your friend” and often necessary to achieve the volume required for a pompadour. Gillen recommends applying this to wet hair and blow drying your hair up and back off your face, lifting the roots up with your fingers. “This style balances out triangular face shapes where the forehead is small and the jaw line is wide,” he adds.

Be sure to have your barber tailor the undercut on the sides to suit your hair length and type. If you’re a lover of the mohawk haircut, but concerned about how it will be perceived, know that an undercut makes it much more acceptable in a variety of settings. Some men even go for a cool fauxhawk because the sides are short but not shaved. If you have a perm or naturally curly hair, leave your top longer and make the most of it! The key is knowing your hair consistency well so that it looks full and robust. Of course, you have your own unique hair type, facial structure, head shape, beard preferences.

Davines Sea Salt Spray 250ml

As a result, these offer a stark contrast to the overall styling, especially the high skin fade on the other side. As a result, this undercut long hairstyle for guys is a hot favorite amongst those who are fans of the edgy and unique look. A textured mullet is relatively easy to maintain but will need daily styling to keep the shape. The side panels have been shaved out and disconnected from the rest of the cut, with scissor layering techniques to create the texture.

Cool designs with a curly top are great if you want to stand out from the crowd and express yourself. The back and sides have been undercut quite low, leaving the top to grow out and a space for the design. Designs don’t take too long to grow out so you can change your look on a regular basis. While it doesn’t apply to every undercut style, you can choose when and where to show off your look if you’ve got an undercut and long hair up top. The strategic use of a head wrap, hair clips, or hair ties can give you the appearance of long hair in situations where you’d rather keep your undercut under wraps.

For both work and date nights, a man bun half updo is perfectly suitable when slicked back. An undercut makes this look a manageable one but also ultra trendy. A great example of how the top-knot or man bun can be done right.

We’ve given you a lot to digest in this article, so let’s review how to take action toward getting an undercut hairstyle that will take your look to the next level. If your hair is thicker than usual, then the undercut quiff is for you. To showcase the difference in length, you may choose a sharp cut.

To achieve this daring style, you’ll need to become a braiding pro. Instead of a harsh, straight-up undercut, your barber will give you a subtle fade on the sides and back. I.e. he/she will start to shorten the length of your hair from approximately mid-point downwards.

These three tools are essential in giving your undercut the texture, volume and height it needs to look sleek and modern. The wavy hair undercut can be great for guys who have unruly waves and want to chop off as much hair as possible. The short sides won’t require any styling, so you’ll be free to try a variety of short and long wavy hairstyles. Casual with a healthy natural shine, the textured undercut can do wonders for your look. To get a textured hairstyle, you’ll need a styling product with low to no shine.

This comeback is still in its infancy, so don’t simply walk into a barbershop, say “curtains, please” and expect to come out looking like TC. Again, giving your stylist a photograph to work from is a very good idea. Rest assured, though, this style will work with a broad spectrum of face shapes and it couldn’t be easier to style.

After all, this is their speciality, and they may see opportunities for refinement to your preferred look that you aren't aware of. Jason Derulo can pull off any look, and we love the way he paired his ombré dreads with shaved sides and a high fade. Call Luka Sabbatt the king of cool with these chest-length locs. They're also easy enough to pull away from your face– just gather them all into a scrunchie and you have a whole new style without so much as using a brush. Effortless but totally sexy, Maluma's side-swept waves framed his face beautifully. For texture similar to the singer's, we suggest using a lightweight air-dry cream that enhances curls, such as Ouai's Curl Crème ($32).

Big Beautiful Balayage Waves

Strawberry blonde balayage with brown roots is fun and exciting, but it isn’t permanent hair dye! For a strawberry balayage haircut like this, it’s important to consider your face shape. If you have a more narrow and oval face shape, it’s perfect for this haircut as it will enhance your natural shape. Cool-toned brown to blonde hair is beautifully melted from dark to light. Adding an accent piece to the front can make the blend a little softer.

#38: Romantic Silver-Blonde Balayage

If you are worried about committing to the look, this is the best time to utilize hair chalk or temporary dye for a quick yet fun color. For a brunette to blonde color,  it’s an amazing tone for fall and winter but still with some lightness. Rock the trendiest look with dimensional vanilla balayage. This balayage style is feathered at the root for a soft and natural grow-out. A blonde balayage can be perfect if you’re worried about your long, fine hair looking flat and lacking dimension.

#12: Ashy Waves with Dark Roots

When it comes to maintenance, toning monthly will be necessary to keep tones cool and ashy. An ash blonde balayage suits darker hair colors extremely well. You can go subtle with your ends or go full in and have your stylist start coloring your hair at the eye level. Ash brown balayage is another stylish hairstyle that one can opt for if someone is looking for a hair makeover. All the tones of this amazing look are softly layered together in a perfect blend. The lovely combo of textures perfectly complements the varying shades of brown and blonde. The easy-to-style mane is something that you can wear everyday, whether it’s a casual weekend or a big party with friends. A change to your look can be subtle and refined, like the golden blonde tresses pictured. The brown lowlights mixed throughout the blonde strands bring a natural dimension to the back-skimming mane. The unbeatable shine makes it a stunning choice for anyone who wants a fresh coif that maintains an understated vibe.

My favorite thing about this hair is that I could melt colors to give more dimensions and still see the blonde part. If the hair is too short, you don’t see many of the blonde in color melts. It works wonders for short hair but also adds some definition and depth to long hair. Add more dimension and depth to your blonde hair with this light blonde balayage.

Overall, the hair color moves from black to light blonde, but it's woven through with tons of different blonde tones in the middle. Any time the hair is ash-toned, it will automatically be more highly maintained than a neutral or warm color. We left some neutrality to this ash to balance out gracefully with every shampoo. Color depositing or toning shampoo is a good way to prevent color from becoming too warm between salon visits. A darker shade gradually washes to a lighter shade, with no darker pieces at the ends of hair. Ombre is less customized than balayage, as the lighter shade is concentrated only from the mid-shaft to ends.

Maintenance can be glossing for tone every 6-8 weeks and blonde balayage touch-ups every weeks. An ash blonde balayage is a light hair color created using a hand-painted highlighting technique. This technique creates a natural-looking, soft transition and dimension throughout the hair. With slight hints of silver and brown, ash blonde is the go-to hue for women who want a bright and full of contrast yet less overwhelming hair color.

The natural contrast of this model’s dark roots helps to enhance her ends and allow them to stand out more than they would against a lighter base color. This balayage color is a dimensional ash blonde with cool and neutral tones. My client was growing out of traditional foil highlights and wanted something less uniform and more natural-looking. I went with a lived-in look for her cut, which is a long bob with loose beach waves for easy styling. See how beautifully blonde hair has been transitioned with light blonde highlights.

Subtly wavy styling really shows off this masterpiece of handpainted bronde, cool blonde, and platinum as the colors catch the light with each bend. All of our Pinterest boards have long been saturated with photos of long, flowing beach waves. Mix it up a bit with a dye job that starts out dark blonde and lightens up as it stretches down the back.

Separate hair into sections to make your DIY balayage ultra-easy. This way, you’ll be able to reach those lower layers and see any spots you’ve missed. These face-framing waves instantly illuminate her skin, offering a lit-from-within glow. The copper cowgirl trend meets balayage in Camila Morrone's subtly eye-catching color. Of course, texture makes a major impact on this look, too, so don’t underestimate the power of tousled waves tucked behind the ears.

Use a purple shampoo at home to keep your color ashy and cool. Some stylists charge an additional fee for extra product used, longer hair length, toning and glazing, a finishing style, for educational advice on styling. Other colorists don’t like set prices at all, they charge only based on the time.

Showcase a cool ombré style by tossing your box braids into a high bun like Storm Reid. We really love how her own hair color mixes with this cool-toned ash blonde. Using some of the darkest shades, this style goes from brown to light caramel. Still adding in blonde notes throughout, this golden head of hair is further enhanced with voluminous curls.

Warm and Bright

Achieve a chic look with dark smokey hair and ash blonde balayage tones. The contrasting hues create depth and dimension that complement long, thick hair. This hair color is perfect for those who want to add a touch of softness to their dark hair. Not only does this hair color add elegance, but it’s low-maintenance. Book your next appointment with your stylist immediately to keep your color looking its best. If you want a fresh hair color that suits thick and long hair, consider a layered ash blonde balayage.

Best Balayage Blonde Hair Ideas

Silver-blue balayage with dark roots is a stunning and unique way to lighten up brunette hair without heading down the blonde route. To keep the ashy tones looking bright, add a blue or purple shampoo to your haircare routine. You can add warm tones to help reflect light, with an overall gloss/toner or dimensional lowlights to make your blondes pop and shine. My favorite part about this balayage ash blonde color would have to be the contrast between the light ends and the dark roots.

All-Natural Blonde Highlights

The caramel coffee blend is emphasized with the blend starting at varying points rather than just at one uniform length. Reminiscent of Tori Kelly’s iconic voluminous hair, this luscious mane shows that curly girls should never be afraid of color. Just think of your textured tresses as an even bigger canvas to show off your sense of style, no matter how bold or refined. Hand-painted long blonde waves are the ideal way to do a low-maintenance blond.

To enhance the contrast of your balayage, add curl or waves to your hair using a 1 1/4-inch curling iron or wand. Creating darker tones using reverse blonde for dark hair is simple. Those who often dye their hair blonde sometimes need to transition back to their natural color slowly. Reverse balayage maintains your blonde color by adding some deeper brown tones and touching up the roots. Adding a bond builder to untouched blonde hair will help protect it and prevent color transfer. A long ashy blonde hair color with curled ends is a classic cool-girl, chic style.

It’s blended perfectly in an ombre-style look and a great twist on the long layered hair. This fun, beach-blonde color is introduced slowly out of dark brown roots. Mixed with darker highlights at the bottom, this is a fun summer look for anyone wanting the oxymoronic mix of subtlety and drama all at once. The three most popular types of highlight techniques include balayage, ombre, and foil highlights.

If the client has a dark dye or box dye, I recommend accomplishing this look in sessions. Although it might be possible to obtain the color in one long session, it would not be possible to maintain the integrity of the hair in one session. Flamboyage is not “open-air”, it is created with transparent adhesive strips. The technique results in soft balayage-like or peek-a-boo highlights.

#13: Brunette to Ash Blonde

Subtle balayage is a soft balayage variation, the color is applied to the areas where it catches the light or where color would fade out naturally. Before taking the plunge into this color, it’s crucial to consider various factors and have open conversations with your stylist. Niki Marie offers valuable insights into what to discuss, including your current base color, shade selection, lifestyle, and cost. Achieving and maintaining an icy blonde requires commitment and proper aftercare. Niki Marie stresses the importance of regular touch-ups and offers specific product recommendations to keep the color looking fresh.

#59: Dark Hair with Dark Blonde Highlights

We have to get it right because we have one day to dye it, so we are going to be up for the next 15 hours just dying it,” she said. Celebrity hairstylist, Chris Appleton, took to TikTok to show off Kardashian’s final look. In the clip, Kardashian walked ahead of Appleton and gave a soft smile for the camera as she glanced back at him. Fluid hair painting is the process of application a lightener/color with the client’s head leaned back against a table. In the 90’s balayage became trendy in the USA, but only now this technique reaches its maximum popularity.

It creates a natural-looking bronde color effect that looks so natural, its hard to tell it's been created by an actual colorist. The light cool tones present a perfect transitioning base if you are hoping to switch your hair color to a lighter one. This wavy balayage blonde hair idea looks seriously amazing.

Try a sweet caramel balayage if you love high-contrasting hair color. For a more dramatic appearance, go big and bold in front with a money piece. A money piece will help brighten your skin complexion and compliment your facial features giving you a glamorous and expensive-looking style.

Who says a Balayage style of highlight can’t be bold when you want it to be? We might think of this style as being more of a way to add dimension while still looking natural, but it can absolutely be a good choice for a more bold look as well. This look polarizes very dark hair at the top with frosty white tips at the bottom for a more exuberant take on Balayage highlights. Another classic beachy, sun-kissed look, these classic blonde locks seem to flow endlessly down from darker tones up top.

Enhance your best features with a short bob with a dark-rooted icy balayage. Ask your stylist for a root shadow matching your natural base color. This will help create a seamless blend as your hair grows out. The best part of a money piece in the front of your hair is that it’s complementary to all face shapes and skin tones.

Kaufmann Desert House by Richard Neutra

kaufmann desert house palm springs california

Richard Neutra, a Vienna-born architect, brought a unique blend of European modernism and Californian innovation to his projects. The collaboration between the client and architect was grounded in a mutual appreciation for cutting-edge design and technological advancement, setting the stage for creating a landmark in modernist architecture. Richard Neutra, an emblematic figure of 20th-century Architecture, excelled in blending technology, aesthetics, and the nuances of the natural environment into his designs. Among his illustrious works, the Kaufmann House in Palm Springs, California, is the quintessential example of his approach to modernist architecture. Twenty-five million dollars is certainly a hefty price tag, but then again, the buyer is stepping back into the past, into a profound moment of architectural history. Consider the second-story, open-air gloriette—a French word translating to "little glory"—where views of the San Jacinto Mountains are particularly heady.

On its left side, the walkway is delineated by a wall faced with dry-set Utah sandstone; a cantilevered roof offers shade. To the right, the view goes across a lawn with interspersed boulders toward an outdoor swimming pool. Behind the sandstone-faced wall Neutra placed a car garage and a secondary entrance into the western wing of the house, which contained the service spaces and servant quarters furthest west. It is one of the most important examples of International Style architecture in the United States and the only one still in private hands. The home was commissioned by Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr., a Pittsburgh department store tycoon as a desert retreat from harsh winters. A decade earlier, Kaufmann commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build Fallingwater in Pennsylvania.

designboom will always be there for you

After purchasing the house and its more than an acre of land for about $1.5 million, the Harrises removed the extra appendages and enlisted two young Los Angeles-area architects, Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, to restore the Neutra design. When the Harrises decided to end their marriage, they faced a dilemma regarding the disposition of the house. Both were clear that the house required a special buyer who would fully appreciate its cultural significance and provide the kind of maintenance such a property requires. They hit upon a seemingly perfect solution -- they offered the house at auction as a piece of art. A precedent had already been set with the 2003 Sotheby's auction of Mies van der Rohe's innovative Farnsworth house which sold for $7.5 million.

The Kaufmann Desert House by Richard Neutra

A handsome southwestern profile composed of vertical stone walls and floating metal planes sits just beyond. From this angle, the structure looks more like an open-air desert pavilion than a home. The home was made to be lived in just 60 days a year (January and February, when the Kaufmanns escaped the Northeast). But after the Kaufmann family sold the estate in 1955, three successive owners — including former Chargers owner Gene Klein and singer Barry Manilow — made changes to make the home more livable year-round. Walls were pushed out, patios were enclosed, surfaces were repainted, air-conditioning was added to the roof, and the original square footage nearly doubled. The updates didn’t stop until 1993, when new owners Brent and Beth Harris, a financial executive and architectural historian, bought the home.

The resulting time-lapse photo is famous, not only for the multiple images of the running "ghost" puppy, but also for Shulman's request that Lilliane position herself on a mat to block the pool light from over-exposing the photo. Designed by local modernist William F. Cody, the Linsk addition was compatible and relatively seamless, but removed the glass corridor to the master bedroom and drastically reduced the amount of light to the interior. Modernist furnishings selected by Neutra were replaced with those chosen by prominent Palm Springs interior designer Arthur Elrod. It was purchased by Eugene and Francis Klein, owners of the San Diego Chargers, who sold the house in 1973 to entertainer Barry Manilow who owned it until 1993. The house has a cross-shaped plan, with a square living and dining room at the centre, and wings that extend out in cardinal directions.

This is particularly evident in the living room, whose walls of steel and glass slide outward toward the southeast, while the construction of deck and supports the hanging wall sliding moving toward the pool and spatially linking the house with it. This radial arm became the hallmark of Neutra, is the “spider leg,” the umbilical cord that merges space and building. After immigrating from Austria, Neutra started his career in America working for a series of well-known architects.

Cultural and Architectural Influence

The main outdoor rooms are enclosed by a vertical aluminum fins that offer flexible protection against sandstorms and intense heat. The east wing is connected with the living space of the north wing through a gallery that houses a bedroom suite. This vacation home was designed to emphasize the desert landscape and its harsh climate. Palm Springs, California undoubtedly has some of the most lavish and beautiful homes in North America. A visit there is like being transported back to the Golden Age of Hollywood where you may just find Bing Crosby playing a round of golf or Marilyn Monroe sipping a martini by the pool. The area has remained landmarks of historical, modern architecture, and the Kaufmann Desert House (or simply “Kaufmann House”) is no exception.

It was initially intended to be a winter retreat for his family from the unforgiving Midwest and East Coast winters, but it ended up becoming one of Palm Springs—and modern architecture’s—most important landmarks. The Kaufmann House is one of the best-known designs by Neutra, a Viennese-born architect who moved to the United States in the 1920s and designed homes for the next few decades for many wealthy West Coast clients. His buildings are seen virtually as the apotheosis of Modernism’s International Style, with their skeletal steel frames and open plans. Yet Neutra was also known for catering sensitively to the needs of his clients, so that their houses would be not only functional but would also nurture their owners psychologically. A handful of his projects are located in Palm Springs, which – thanks to its location two hours east of Hollywood – became a hotbed of modernist architecture during the mid-20th century. Movie stars and celebrities in the 1950s and 1960s hired architects to build contemporary weekend residences that were in vogue at the time.

It's boxy design, flat roof, covered outdoor spaces, and slatted metal walls all cater to the desert environment, making it a comfortable living space year-round. Located at 470 West Vista Chino in Palm Springs, California, this masterpiece of architecture was designed to connect residents and visitors to the beautiful surrounding desert, letting the outside in and vice versa. The two-story, five-bedroom, five-bathroom, home was built in a pinwheel design with low horizontal planes that bring the house closer to the desert landscape, giving the illusion that it is floating amongst the mountains. This illusion is emphasized by the use of sliding glass doors that open up to the walkways and patios. The effect the glass doors give to the Kaufman House is that when they are opened, the interior and exterior become a singular flowing space.

The rest of the house branches out like a pinwheel in each of the cardinal directions. From the center of the house each wing that branches out has its own specific function; however, the most important aspects of the house are oriented east/west while the supporting features are oriented north/south. Material choices in the Kaufmann House also reflect Neutra’s innovative approach to architecture.

Through the collaboration of these two individuals, the Hearst Castle emerged out of the hill and would become a landmark for California history and culture of the 20th century. Paul R. Williams was an extraordinary man and a prolific Architect practicing during Hollywood’s Golden age. He worked on a wide variety of projects including churches, airports, public housing, courthouses, and offices; however, he is best known for his luxury custom homes. The case study house program was an experimental program set up by John Entenza through Arts and Architecture Magazine, that facilitated the design, construction and publishing of modern single-family homes.

Such auctions are bringing a new level of scrutiny to a form that, little more than a decade ago, attracted so little notice that the Kaufmann House was being offered for sale as a teardown. Palm Springs is celebrating its status as a modernist mecca from 15 to 25 February 2018, when the annual Modernism Week takes place. A dialogue between indoors and outdoors is one of the Kaufmann Desert House’s finest attributes, lending it a cinematic quality.

Even though Doe is selling the house the old-fashioned way, by walking prospective buyers through the property one by one, he does not disparage the headline-grabbing method of selling rare houses at public auction. Doe, in fact, says he ran into Beth Harris the day after the auction, and opined he “could not have done a better job of marketing.” When the auction sale fell through, the Harrises turned to Doe. The first effort was a widely publicized auction last year at Christie’s, the New York auction house, where the modernist gem sold for a breathtaking $19.1 million. That kind of fame can have its drawbacks, however, especially for the person in charge of selling a house that nearly everybody, it seems, wants to see. Out of self-defense — and consideration for the owners, who still occupy the residence — Doe came up with a Draconian test to sift the gold from the sand. “I tell them,” he says with the modulated tones of a man who for 30 years has sold houses by big-name architects, “that they can see the house, if they can qualify to pay for it.” The property is listed for $12 million.

Constructed as a series of horizontal planes that seem to float over glass walls, the house seems to absorb the mood of the surrounding desert. The variety of spaces, ranging from enclosed to semi-enclosed to open, transcends any traditional distinction between indoors and outdoors in favor of a continuous, human-made environment. Moreover, the new environment was designed so that its occupants could fine-tune its features for physical comfort, most notably the radiant heating and cooling systems for the concrete surfaces of the outside terraces. Lastly, within the hostile desert surroundings the new environment was to be a safe one as exemplified by the mirrors Neutra installed in unexpected places, which allowed the inhabitants to scan their immediate surroundings. The south wing connects to the public realm and includes a carport and two long covered walkways. These walkways are separated by a massive stone wall and led to public and service entries, respectively.

Neutra's Kaufmann House epitomises desert modernism in Palm Springs

The war moratoriums were slowly lifted as World War II ended, but relatively strict building regulations remained enforced. However, Neutra was able to find his way around the restrictions by breaking ground on the foundation a few days before the official enforcement. The project resulted in a total cost of nearly $300,000, surpassing the current single-family residence average of $40,000. Neutra’s work is notable for its ability to blur the boundary between inside and outside.

The goal was to highlight modern homes constructed with industrial materials and techniques that could help solve the housing needs after WWII. No other building has been referred to or echoed in architecture more than the Pantheon. Architects worldwide have extracted principles from this building throughout the course of history. It can give insight into our ancestors' customs, rituals, technologies, religions, and daily life. Architecture can provide a deeper understanding of the evolution and development of the human species.

She continues to promote architectural education through her work with the California Preservation Foundation, and as a major donor to the emerging Palm Springs Art Museum's Architecture & Design Center, named the Edwards Harris Pavilion in her honor. Her former husband Brent also continues to actively support preservation activities in Palm Springs and is currently restoring a Welton Becket-designed home in the historic Tennis Club neighborhood. Barry Manilow ultimately moved into the old Walter Braunschweiger Residence, a 1935 Spanish-style compound on a private hilltop in the town's Mesa neighborhood, leaving the Kaufmann desert house to sit empty for 3 ½ years.

Timeline

Much was made of Neutra's skirting of local ordinances that prohibited second stories, but similar upper-level sleeping porches were commonplace in the desert. They were often included in early Spanish-style homes that, in pre-air conditioning days, had sleeping porches (or gloriettes) that caught the evening breeze and allowed locals to sleep outdoors during the hottest summer months. The origins of the house are familiar to architecture fans because of the pedigree of its owner, Edgar Kaufmann, the Pittsburg department store magnate. Kaufmann meant no disrespect to Wright, but he sought a home more open and airy than anything in Wright's vocabulary.

It then went through a series of several owners including famed singer Barry Manilow and Eugene V. Klein, who was the owner of the San Diego Chargers. During this time, it also underwent various interior and architectural changes without any thought of preservation from any of the ensuing owners. The roof was altered to add air-conditioning, wallpaper was put up in the bedrooms, and a wall was torn down in the living room to add additional living space.

In 1993, the house’s current owner hired Los Angeles architectural firm Marmol and Radziner to return the house to its original state by relying on many painstakingly researched original materials and production processes. The influence of the Kaufmann House extends beyond its immediate visual and spatial attributes; it has permeated various realms of culture and design. The house has been featured in numerous films, advertisements, and fashion shoots, each time serving as a symbol of stylish modern living and the seamless integration of architecture and nature. Its representation in popular media has played a pivotal role in shaping public perceptions of modernist architecture, portraying it as an ideal of sophistication and modern American lifestyle.

Neutra responded to the flat site with a pinwheel floor plan whose four wings follow the cardinal directions. The house is entered through the southern wing, which is oriented perpendicular to the street. Visitors first follow a short, irregular pathway that traverses a small, landscaped area with boulders and desert plants.

Major outdoor rooms are enclosed by a row of movable vertical fins that offer flexible protection against sandstorms and intense heat. In 1945, Kaufmann acquired a large 200' x 300' (2.6 acre) site that was isolated near the foot of Mt. San Jacinto and studded with rugged desert landscape. His desert house was not designed to blend into the site in the Wrightian style; rather it was to be an object in space in the classical fashion of the European villa. Originally priced as $30,000, (the 3,800 sq. ft. home ultimately cost $300,000) the house turned out to be simple -- and simply expensive. Rectangular in plan, its form was essentially a glass pavilion with planar walls that extended into the site via two axes one north-south -- the other east-west. In this plan, outdoor living areas are sheltered by adjustable walls composed of movable vertical fins that offer flexible protection against sandstorms.

The architect championed the importance of "ready-for-anything" designs that have open, multi-use spaces, and coined the concept "The Changing House" for an article he wrote in 1947 for the Los Angeles Times newspaper. After the Harrises divorced, the home was supposedly sold on May 13, 2008, for US$15 million at auction by Christie's as a part of a high-profile sale of contemporary art. Additionally, the Harrises were able to have a long-closed section of a Utah quarry re-opened to mine matching stone to replace what had been removed or damaged. To help restore the desert buffer Neutra had envisioned for the house, the Harrises also bought several adjoining plots to more than double the land around the 3,200-square-foot (300 m2) house. The Kaufmann House, or Kaufmann Desert House, in Palm Springs, California, was designed by Richard Neutra in 1946.

After having been significantly amended by its successive owners, current owners of the residence decided to return it to its original state. The architects removed the areas added and restored the house based on the famous photographs Julius Shulman did of the house in 1947. The architects decided to also return to the desert garden look it had in times of Neutra. In addition, they incorporated a discrete heating, air conditioning and ventilation system, and a new pavilion at the pool, known as the Harris Poll House. Kaufmann passed away in 1955 and the Kaufmann House was left abandoned for several years.

His career took off and his work in Southern California began after an old classmate, Rudolph Schindler, encouraged him to move there. Schindler is best known for 1929’s Lovell House in Los Angeles, which is believed to be one of the first steel-framed homes in America and is celebrated for its extensive glass windows and cable-suspended balconies. Not surprisingly, Richard Neutra became famous for designing his houses in the International Style, using a great deal of glass and metal in his projects—just what Kaufmann was after to better observe the desert environs. Following the end of World War II, he was commissioned for the Kaufmann house, and it later became a beloved piece of the renowned International Style architecture he was known for. So exacting were the standards of the owners and architects that when, in the course of the restoration, a missing stone wall had to be reconstructed a defunct Utah sandstone quarry was re-opened to secure matching stone. The first batch of stone that arrived was not a perfect match, but a second quarry did the trick.

The central hub of the pinwheel plan is the living area to the right of the entrance hallway. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panes along the right side and the far end fill the room with abundant light, unless the curtains are pulled, and, depending on the weather, open it to the outdoor swimming pool. Forming the center of the room is a fireplace set into a wall, as well as an adjacent sofa. Behind the fireplace a passageway leads along another full-height glass wall to the eastern wing, which accommodates a master bedroom with bathroom, a dressing area, and a small study or den. A covered, outdoor walkway leads from the enclosed living area along a low water channel, or lily pond, to two guest bedrooms in the northern wing. Along its eastern side, the walkway widens into an outdoor terrace between the living area and the guest rooms.

When the windscreens are not required, louvers can be adjusted to open up to the views. Another essential feature of the home is the use of the “wings.” The house is prominently focused on being east- and west- concentrated for sunset and sunrise purposes. The west wing is used for the kitchen and service rooms and the east wing is used for the master bedroom. The family and dining areas located at the center of the home are square to conform to the boxy design of the property. The plan of the house was tailored to the always-warm California climate, which at times can be rather harsh.

When Brent and Beth Harris first saw the Kaufmann House, it was neither a pretty palace nor an obvious candidate for restoration. Strikingly photographed in 1947 by Julius Shulman, it stood vacant for several years after Kaufmann’s death in 1955. Then it went through a series of owners, including the singer Barry Manilow, and a series of renovations. Along the way, a light-disseminating patio was enclosed, one wall was broken through for the addition of a media room, the sleek roof lines were interrupted with air-conditioning units, and some bedrooms were wallpapered in delicate floral prints. Those owners, Brent Harris, an investment manager, and Beth Edwards Harris, an architectural historian, are finalizing their divorce, and plan to auction the Kaufmann House at Christie’s in New York in May. The building, with a presale estimate of $15 million to $25 million, will be part of Christie’s high-profile evening sale of postwar and contemporary art.
